HKAC @ Legacy Hall, Central Market: “Archi-cing” Exhibition
2021-2022
Legacy Hall,1/F Central Market
Project Description:
Central Market was listed as a Grade 3 historic building in 1990. Together with Chinachem Group, the Urban Renewal Authority revitalizes Central Market to create a public space for the enjoyment of the community composed of architecture, culture, art, exhibition, lifestyle industries and creative design.
Hong Kong Architecture Centre is honoured to be a partner, designing the Legacy Hall with the specially-curated exhibition ‘Archi-cing’. Central Market’s stories and history are displayed in
playful ways, transformed into a space of unique cultural ambience. A sense of serenity is created amidst the hustle and bustle of the city for the people’s enjoyment, inviting the public to tour the Market, connect with the exhibits and interact with each other, thus bringing back
collective memory as well as appreciating the many stories of the Market in days gone by. We anticipate that the exhibition can inspire the public to go down memory lane, explore and appreciate the Market’s history and modernist architecture as well as envision and explore the vanishing aesthetics of the city.
Description how the project contributes with humanity:
Different organizations have been invited in the community for collaboration. Through diverse multi-media displays such as old photographs, traditional tools for measurement, three-dimensional model printing of stalls, oral history of residents of the neighbourhood and a series of thematic talk and walk on historic buildings and Central Market, we aim to leave traces of local history and culture and transform them into accessible memory, and to co-create a place of innovation and humanities, shaping a legacy of urban symbiosis and community sharing.
